- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools is updating background checks by re-fingerprinting staff and issuing new 'Security Certified' badges, starting in the Paint Branch cluster on Sept. 8—this work will use an electronic system to finish clearances for all 211 schools by mid-December. - ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools welcomes community volunteers for chaperoning trips, coaching, and classroom support and requires that all helpers complete required training—some roles need a fingerprinted background check. - ➤ When the new school year started, Montgomery County Public Schools filled 98 percent of teacher positions, with 95 percent of special education slots and 93 percent of paraeducator roles filled, though vacancies remain for 113 elementary, 44 middle, and 34 high school teachers. - ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools is working to fix mold, bugs and poor ventilation at the Carver Education Services Center in Rockville — some employees have moved to Grosvenor Center in Bethesda while cleanup continues. - ➤ Montgomery County installed over 200 'No Right on Red' signs at busy downtown intersections to keep streets safe — drivers who turn right on red may be fined $90 and get one point on their license. - ➤ Tuesday, councilmembers changed the setback rule for a Costco gas station in Viva White Oak by requiring fuel pumps to be located 500 feet from buildings, streams and wells; they voted 9—2 so that Costco will build its store and gas station on a project site that will also include homes, shops and public space near the FDA campus.
