COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mail carrier Katherine Carpenter retired after 37 years on Aug. 28 and celebrated by taking a dip in The Gables community pool—neighbors noted that her service, from delivering mail to caring for pets, made her a cherished part of the community.  MoCo360

  • Northwood High was locked down after a report that a student with a possible weapon was off campus—police later took an individual into custody as the investigation continued.  MoCo360

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Sept. 11th, remembrances across the D.C. area honored the 9/11 victims and fallen firefighters with events in Gaithersburg, Arlington, and Alexandria—community volunteers and officials led memorial climbs, wreath-laying, and grave-cleaning ceremonies to mark the 24th anniversary of the attacks.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools is updating background checks by re-fingerprinting staff and issuing new 'Security Certified' badges, starting in the Paint Branch cluster on Sept. 8—this work will use an electronic system to finish clearances for all 211 schools by mid-December. The district will report progress to the Board of Education in September and to the Montgomery County Council Audit Committee on Sept. 26.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Montgomery County Public Schools welcomes community volunteers for chaperoning trips, coaching, and classroom support and requires that all helpers complete required training—some roles need a fingerprinted background check.   • When the new school year started, Montgomery County Public Schools filled 98 percent of teacher positions, with 95 percent of special education slots and 93 percent of paraeducator roles filled, though vacancies remain for 113 elementary, 44 middle, and 34 high school teachers. The district hired 846 new teachers—22 percent more than last year—and added 688 special education roles to address past shortages and boost diversity in its workforce.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools is working to fix mold, bugs and poor ventilation at the Carver Education Services Center in Rockville — some employees have moved to Grosvenor Center in Bethesda while cleanup continues. Officials said they are keeping a close watch on other schools as it will take many years to correct long-standing maintenance issues.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Gov. Wes Moore appointed Montgomery County Assistant State’s Attorney James Dietrich as a Circuit Court judge on September 11 – Dietrich, who has led high-profile cases and taught at Catholic University, said he is honored and ready to serve the county.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County installed over 200 'No Right on Red' signs at busy downtown intersections to keep streets safe — drivers who turn right on red may be fined $90 and get one point on their license. County council passed the Safe Streets Act to help lower injuries for pedestrians and cyclists.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Local government leaders in D.C., Maryland and Virginia are testing how AI can improve services by handling tasks such as 30% of non-emergency 311 calls, report generation, and job training. Officials discussed ways to let staff focus on urgent needs—aiming for quicker responses and better service.  FOX 5 DC
  • Tuesday, councilmembers changed the setback rule for a Costco gas station in Viva White Oak by requiring fuel pumps to be located 500 feet from buildings, streams and wells; they voted 9—2 so that Costco will build its store and gas station on a project site that will also include homes, shops and public space near the FDA campus.  Montgomery Community Media
  • More than 150 Montgomery County residents attended a public hearing at Montgomery Blair High School Wednesday night where County Executive Marc Elrich argued that the University Boulevard Corridor Plan could lead to displacement and heavy traffic — his testimony was interrupted seconds in by Nimbee, a bee mascot playing protest music. Community members strongly opposed the rezoning efforts and called for more community input along with a detailed impact analysis — residents and local leaders continue to push for safer, affordable growth.  MoCo360
