COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Scotland African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Montgomery County has been restored and expanded after a 2019 flood damaged its historic building built by freed slaves and displaced congregants for over five years. Pastor Evalina Huggins said the church now sits four feet higher and uses two bioretention ponds to divert floodwaters away — a project funded by private, corporate, county and state contributions.  WTOP

CRIME NEWS

  • A former Senior Budget Analyst from Montgomery Village pleaded guilty to embezzling over $650,000 from the State Department between March 2022 and April 2024—she faces up to 10 years in prison with a sentencing set for September 18 and must pay $657,347.50 in restitution.  WJLA
  • Vipul Thakkar (53) of Owings Mills pleaded guilty to a gold bar scam that targeted two elderly victims in Montgomery County and received a 10-year sentence with only 18 months to serve, 5 years of probation, and an order to pay $40,000 in restitution.  WTOP
  • On April 27, 2025, at about 7:40 a.m., Montgomery County Police stopped Derwood driver Karen Christine Gangloff when her Jeep sped through barriers set to protect Pike's Peek 10k runners—officers later broke her window to remove her and charged her with first-degree assault and disorderly conduct.  WJLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fourteen MCPS students at seven high schools have received National Merit corporate-sponsored scholarships that offer renewable stipends from $1,000 to $10,000 per year or one-time payments between $2,500 and $5,000+ The awards let students attend any regionally accredited college and come from sponsors such as AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals+Leidos.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Students at Sligo Middle School presented research on topics including space exploration and writing practice at the school’s first Project SUCCESS Symposium on April 25. Teachers and parents said the interdisciplinary program—where students learn English, Science, and Social Studies from the same teacher for four consecutive periods—boosted student confidence and academic skills.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Council approved collective bargaining agreements for three unions on Tuesday, including wage increases to offset inflation and step raises for long-term employees—councilmembers warned the contracts leave few options for cost cuts in a $7.65 billion operating budget and noted an income tax hike may be needed to fund public schools in the coming fiscal year.  MoCo360
