CRIME NEWS

  • A Montgomery County jury convicted 21 year old Edgard Castro Contreras of first degree murder, first degree conspiracy and firearm charges for killing Edvin Agustín León at Northwest Stream Valley Park on November 9th, 2022—his sentencing will take place on August 18 while another co accused awaits a retrial.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS recognized Cedar Grove Elementary School media specialist Karina-Maria Hirschhorn, a 25-year veteran, during National Library Week for mentoring fourth graders on a morning news broadcast + organizing book clubs and Music Cafe sessions for fifth graders.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Former acting assistant principal Rahman Culver filed a lawsuit against Montgomery County Public Schools and the school board, alleging their staffing guidelines limit Black educators from administrative roles—he claims these changes forced him into a lower-paying position that did not match his experience. Culver seeks policy changes to ensure that qualified educators are not relegated to positions in high-poverty schools, which he believes is discriminatory.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County launched its new ELEVATE Podcast today to offer parents, educators and community partners expert advice on early childhood development. Co-hosted by DHHS staff (Inette Bolden and Jennifer Ferreira), the podcast covers topics like developmental milestones and play-based learning (key methods for growth) and is available on the Child Care Support Services website.  Montgomery Community Media
  • More than 200 students gathered at Julius West Middle School for the MCPS annual Youth Climate Summit, where they learned about climate change, worked on action projects, and took part in workshops and panel discussions. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Council unanimously passed legislation on April 1 that expands the Homeowner’s Property Tax Credit to cover more residents—raising household income limits from $60,000 to $75,000 and net worth limits from $200,000 to $250,000. The measure will take effect 91 days after the county executive signs the bill.  WJLA
  • The Maryland Transit Administration has begun dynamic testing of all eight Purple Line light rail vehicles on a one-mile track at its Veterans Parkway Operations and Maintenance Facility in Glenridge—marking a key step in the project. The 16-mile rail line is 76% complete and will expand testing to longer tracks as it prepares for passenger service in late 2027.  Montgomery Community Media
