Cedar Run - Whiteoak Canyon (Rating: A)

DIFFICULTY AND ROUTE: This beautiful circuit hike in the Central District of Shenandoah National Park is approximately 8.0 miles with 2,400' elevation gain. Starting at the eastern park boundary near Syria, VA, we'll complete the circuit in a clockwise direction, ascending the Cedar Run Trail for about 3 miles. This will be a strenuous climb up to Skyline Drive, then descending on the Whiteoak Canyon Trail.

PACE: We'll hike at a 2.0 - 2.5 mph pace on average, but more slowly on steep or slippery terrain. We'll regroup at all intersections.

BRING: water, snacks/lunch, hiking boots/shoes, and a first-aid kit. Bring rain gear regardless of the forecast.

DOGS: Dogs will not be allowed for this hike.

RSVP: If your plans change and you cannot come, change your RSVP promptly, so another hiker may take your place.

CARPOOL: The suggested carpool location is at the Centerville Park and Ride . Driving time from there to the trailhead is about 1 hour 30 minutes. Please arrive at the Park and Ride by 7:05AM to form carpools so all cars can leave at 7:15AM. The GPS coordinates for the trailhead parking lot are provided below. The leader will NOT be at the carpool location.

Neither the Club nor the hike leaders are responsible for coordinating transportation to/from the trailhead. Hikers are not guaranteed to get a ride from the carpool location. Carpooling is organized by the participants and they participate at their own risk.

Suggested carpool fee is $9.

TRAILHEAD: Lower Whiteoak Canyon Fee Station & Parking GPS Coordinates: 38.5395, -78.3492 (Do NOT go to the upper Whiteoak Canyon lot on Skyline Drive.)

Trailhead meetup time: 8:45 a.m. We hike at 9:00.

Rating: A You must be experienced in hikes of this distance and elevation gain.
