EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS students will share full-tuition Posse scholarships as part of over ($15 million) awarded to 60 regional winners and will be honored on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at Lincoln Theatre. The program recognizes exceptional academic and leadership skills by forming multicultural college teams.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • MCPS is hosting a job fair for bus drivers on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Division of Transportation Services’ Shady Grove Transportation Depot in Rockville. The fair runs from 10:30 a.m. + 12:30 p.m., and candidates must meet licensing and experience requirements to apply via the MCPS Careers portal.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • MCPS completed background checks for nearly 10,600 school-based staff last week at Paint Branch, Springbrook, and Damascus highs and will soon re-screen about 3,400 other employees to meet safety standards; the process cost nearly $1.86 million (announced at Rockville headquarters).  MoCo360
  • MCPS students at Northwest High School and Roberto Clemente Middle School presented Unleashing Potential — a music video showcasing creativity and teamwork — yesterday. The project highlights talent and the guidance of dedicated educators.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Superintendent Thomas Taylor presented his Fiscal Year 2027 Operating Budget recommendation to the Board of Education on Thursday, Dec. 18. The Board & County Council will hold public hearings & work sessions to gather community input before final approval.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County officials and the Economic Development Corporation announced up to $7.5 million in grants for 55 local tech and life sciences startups — a boost for innovation and local growth.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County will ban plastic bags after county leaders said a 5-cent tax did not work. Officials plan to implement the new rule soon to reduce waste in the community.  WUSA9
  • The Burtonsville Volunteer Fire Company got a federal grant of $379,999 to hire a recruitment specialist & pay tuition for volunteers, while Maryland State Police received $125,000 for a smoke and CO2 alarm program.
