COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery County shelters have reached capacity as winter approaches—one local homeless service provider is boosting resources to meet the rising demand for shelter. The agency plans to expand support as more people seek help when colder weather sets in.  WUSA9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County teacher Nicole Murray-Lewis was selected as the new teacher member-elect for the Maryland State Board of Education—she will represent teacher and student concerns such as resource shortages and high workloads while expected to start in July following a formal appointment by Governor Wes Moore with Senate consent.  WJLA
  • Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced a new state plan to address the teacher shortage — his plan includes $19 million in grants to help schools hire more teachers.  WUSA9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County officials reported that 30,000 residents applied for the housing choice voucher program—only 5,000 will be selected by lottery.  WUSA9
  • Montgomery County Councilmembers accepted a $1.5 million state grant Tuesday to help restart White’s Ferry service, which closed in 2020 over a land dispute—county matching funds bring the public investment to $3 million while the ferry operators and Virginia landing owner must reach an agreement by July 2026—to resume daily service for 600 to 800 cars.  Montgomery Community Media

SPORTS NEWS

  • Quince Orchard and Sherwood High Schools are each one win away from the state football title as they prepare for championship games in Annapolis; Quince Orchard will face Dr.-Henry-A.-Wise-Jr. on Dec.-5 at 7-p.m. while Sherwood will play Mergenthaler-Vocational-Tech on Dec.-4 at 7-p.m. They hold records of 13-0 and 11-1 after strong playoff runs.  Montgomery Community Media
