CRIME NEWS

  • A sixth grader at Odessa Shannon Middle School suffered a stroke after being hit by a pin during gym class bullying and now awaits major surgery (set for January) while a fifth grader at Sequoyah Elementary was reportedly harassed by classmates, and both cases are under investigation.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Classes resumed at Thomas S. Wootton High School in Rockville after students were evacuated at 7:20 a.m. on Monday due to a gas odor—staff and the gas company found a failed regulator and a bee's nest in a boiler vent pipe, and the needed part will be installed later.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County officials are considering repurposing the under-construction Crown High School in Gaithersburg as a temporary holding facility for students during renovations — a plan that has divided parents and community members — with a decision expected by March.  WJLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Grace Rivera-Oven filed to run for re-election to her District 1 seat on the Montgomery County school board and will serve as board president starting December—former MCCPTA chair Sally McCarthy also filed for the District 3 seat with four board seats on the ballot in the June primary and filings due by Feb. 24. This move sets the stage for a competitive school board race in the upcoming election.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County placed a Silver Spring apartment community on notice—officials said the measure comes after reports of rodent problems and they expect prompt corrective action.  WUSA9
  • Maryland senators are proposing legislation to rename the Olney post office after Sgt. Edward Ramsey—an Army veteran who worked 27 years at the facility, honoring his service to the community.  WUSA9
  • Montgomery County leaders and developers from WRS, Inc. announced that the long-vacant Lakeforest Mall will be demolished in the coming weeks to start a mixed-use project that includes a new transit center — located closer to Maryland Route 355 to improve bus connections — and plans for up to 1,600 homes, retail spaces, and public areas. The transit center is expected to open in two to three years.  WJLA

  • Montgomery County and Maryland officials on Monday revealed new plans for the former Lakeforest Mall site—officials did not provide further details.  WUSA9

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, high school football quarterfinals ended with three teams advancing to the state semifinals — Quince Orchard defeated C.H. Flowers in Gaithersburg, Churchill beat Blair, and Sherwood outlasted North Point. Paint Branch lost its game to the Broadneck Bruins, leaving them out of the final four.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery College men’s soccer team finished their season as Region 20 champions and NJCAA Division I national qualifiers with a 16-6-1 record after a strong run in Daytona Beach—marking one of the best campaigns in team history. The Raptors upset top seed Tyler Junior College 2 to 0 in their opening NJCAA National Tournament game—then lost 5 to 1 to Indian Hills Community College.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Olympic gold medalist (Quincy Wilson) committed to run for the University of Maryland after choosing to stay in Maryland for his college career. The Bullis High School track star broke under-18 records and won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.  FOX 5 DC
