Good morning, Rockville. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 5th of November.
COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Maryland Board of Public Works approved the return of a quarter-acre parcel that once served as an African American cemetery in Cabin John to the descendants of Morningstar Tabernacle No. 88; the land, taken in the 1960s for highway construction and believed to hold up to 26 unmarked graves, attracted support from groups like Friends of Moses Hall and the Maryland Sierra Club. This decision restores a historic site that has been part of the community’s heritage since the late 1800s. Montgomery Community Media
- ➤ A Montgomery County mom (Kristin Schmidt) joined a grassroots effort (Grocery Buddy) to help people buy groceries during the 35th day of the government shutdown as SNAP benefits remain uncertain. She organized volunteer matching and will launch a website soon to speed up help for those in need. WTOP
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools enrollment dropped by 2,641 students from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 and is expected to decline by nearly 7,000 more over the next six years. - ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) told its school board yesterday that it will explore partnering with private companies to fund facility projects in its planned six-year, $2.7 billion capital improvements program.
