EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Montgomery County PTA urged MCPS to slow its plan for a new school program model when more than 90% of delegates approved a resolution on Wednesday night. The group said the process is being rushed and they want a one-year delay (to allow more community input and review of costs) before moving forward.  MoCo360
  • Goshen Elementary held a Pink Out Tuesday celebration on Oct 28 to honor administrative secretary Ruth Wilson (a breast cancer survivor) who inspires the school. Students and staff wore pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • The Montgomery County school board allowed MCPS to explore plans (which may close Silver Spring International Middle School by 2031 and use Crown High as a temporary school) as community input is set for December and recommendations will be released in February ahead of a board vote in March.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County, state and federal officials visited the nonprofit Upcounty Hub in Germantown on Friday to stress local action as SNAP benefits for November were not authorized and disruptions in federal food aid were expected starting Saturday — the nonprofit set special pantry hours for federal workers and nearly 100 impacted individuals have visited so far.  MoCo360
  • Federal SNAP benefits will be halted today due to the government shutdown—state officials are stepping in with emergency funds and local measures to help low-income families avoid hunger. In Maryland, Gov. Wes Moore declared a state of emergency and allocated $10 million to support food banks as similar actions unfold nationwide.  FOX 5 DC
