  • Upcounty Hub launched a food pantry for furloughed federal workers last week and served 25 employees after the government shutdown increased demand. Walt Whitman High School will host the intergenerational 'It’s Academic' contest today while Bethesda-based Culta named Joseph Andreae as its new CEO to expand production—adding key local developments.  MoCo360

  • Woodmont Grill closed after more than 30 years of service when its website announced the shutdown at 7715 Woodmont Ave in Bethesda — the Hillstone Restaurant group did not offer an explanation.  MoCo360

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bethesda Magazine’s November and December issue shows many local events, including a Maryland Emancipation Day celebration at Woodlawn Manor Cultural Park, a Rockville 10K/5K race, Veterans Day observances in Rockville and Gaithersburg, theater plays, concerts and holiday parades at parks and community venues—giving residents simple ways to enjoy the season.   • On October 29 at 6:30 p.m., about 140 job seekers gathered at USG in Rockville for a Bethesda Today event where career experts discussed the tight market & the benefits of using networking, continued education, and ethical AI in job searches. Speakers noted that employers such as Montgomery County Public Schools, Amazon, and Capital One are still hiring amid federal job cuts.  MoCo360
  • Maryland officials are warning that United Natural Foods will close four Shoppers Food Warehouse stores by Nov. 8—three in Prince George’s County and one in Montgomery—which may lead to a local food desert and impact team members. The closures will affect the College Park, Laurel Contee, Coral Hills and Germantown locations, pushing affected employees to move to other stores.  FOX 5 DC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting November 5, the Montgomery County Commission on Women and the Montgomery County Bar Association Family Law Section will hold a free monthly virtual seminar on separation and divorce to help Maryland residents understand legal and practical issues. The sessions will take place via Zoom from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month until June.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools will host a bus driver and bus attendant job fair from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Nov. 13 at the Division of Transportation Services, 16651 Crabbs Branch Way in Rockville (applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 21, hold a clean driving record with no more than one point, and have three years of driving experience including one year in the U.S.).  Montgomery County Public Schools

  • Montgomery County will begin collecting leaves on Nov. 10 over a six-week period and asks residents not to put piles in the road. Officials ban gas-powered leaf blowers — a violation can lead to a $500 fine — and suggest using electric tools or a manual rake to help the soil and wildlife.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County said that about 68,000 residents will not get their SNAP benefits on Nov. 1 due to the ongoing federal shutdown — the county does not have funds to add money to the lost benefits as food prices continue to rise.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Food banks across D.C., Maryland, and Virginia are bracing for a surge in demand as millions risk losing SNAP benefits by the end of the week due to the federal shutdown. Montgomery County has allocated $8 million to support nonprofits—helping to keep shelves stocked amid growing need.  FOX 5 DC
  • Officials in the DMV region are urging extra caution for Halloween due to early dusk and dark costumes—Montgomery County is boosting traffic enforcement and hosting child-safe events while the District and Fairfax County issue safety tips for drivers and pedestrians.  FOX 5 DC
