COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 2025 Guide to Giving highlights local nonprofits—recommended by groups like Greater Washington Community Foundation, Spur Local and the Arts and Humanities Council of Montgomery County—that help residents with theater, housing, food aid and language classes. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New traffic signs will be installed in Aspen Hill after the death of 11-year-old Summer Lim led residents to call for more warnings—local voices say the additions are meant to help drivers slow down and prevent further collisions.  WUSA9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 170 high school students attended the Youth Leadership Summit at Montgomery College’s Germantown Campus on October 27th—where they took part in workshops and team-building activities to learn about academic programs, career pathways, and connections with MCPS and college resources for emergent multilingual learners.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Montgomery County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor proposed closing Silver Spring International Middle School in five years and relocating Sligo Creek Elementary to a new site in fall; the plan is on hold after the 90-year-old building proved unsuitable, and parents voiced their concerns at a meeting on October 23. The district will provide more details at a Board of Education work session on November 4—promising further community engagement as planning continues.  WJLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland lawmakers will consider House Bill 1187 that would require insurers to cover scalp cooling treatment—an option that helped breast cancer survivor Rossalynn Ripper preserve her hair during chemotherapy. Delegate Latoya Nkongolo said a cost analysis is expected in December and the bill may be voted on early next year.  WUSA9
  • On October 27th the Montgomery County Planning Board approved an amendment to the 1999 plans for Geico's Friendship Heights campus—removing all office space as Geico prepares to relocate its headquarters to downtown Bethesda. Local residents and officials voiced concerns about environmental impacts and the preservation of historic features as the planning team works toward a new master plan.  MoCo360

SPORTS NEWS

  • Last week in Montgomery County, high school football saw No. 4 Quince Orchard improve to 8-0 with a 35-16 win over Northwest while No. 5 Good Counsel lost to No. 15 Gonzaga and No. 17 Sherwood won by three touchdowns against Damascus. Other teams, including Paint Branch, Churchill, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase, also earned wins as they prepared for season-ending matchups.  MoCo360
