  • Rallies were held throughout Montgomery County in the 'No Kings' movement where local lawmakers and officials spoke about fighting for democracy and community safety — the movement will hold its next online event today at 8 p.m. Eastern time.  Montgomery Community Media
  • On Sunday, 320 people ran or walked a 5K starting at Walt Whitman High School to honor Arthur Dubin, who died 10 months ago from CJD. The event raised over $75,000 for the CJD Foundation to fund research — a tribute that brought friends, family, and neighbors together.  Montgomery Community Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • Diwali was celebrated Monday as more than a billion people lit diyas, set off firecrackers, and shared sweets to honor the triumph of light over darkness. In the D.C. area, free events are planned on Oct 30 and in Maryland on Nov 16—providing local opportunities to join the festivities.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools updated its student code of conduct amid concerns that it may harm Black, Latino and disabled students (community groups urged the use of restorative methods to help students make up missed classes). Officials said they revised the code to raise accountability and now offer it in seven languages (including Spanish) to improve access for all families.  WJLA
  • Montgomery College media production students took part in a global 24-hour live stream that began Oct 16 in Sydney and showcased campus life, student experiences, alumni voices and creative projects—over 500 students from 17 community colleges worldwide participated.   • Montgomery County Public Schools will move this year's high school graduations to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The change will take effect for graduation season, marking a shift from past venue practices.  WUSA9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Furloughed federal workers spoke up at a support night held Friday at Blair High School in Silver Spring, where they shared fears of running out of money and worries about finding new jobs after recent layoffs.
