  • According to the 2025 Hunger Report by Capital Area Food Bank, 35% of Montgomery County residents are facing food insecurity, while 36% are affected in the wider Washington, D.C. area. Local leaders say federal SNAP and Medicaid cuts are reducing meal access — adding to the region's growing need for assistance.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools will hold all high school graduations for the class of 2026 at UMBC in Baltimore to offer a secure indoor setting and lower costs—further details on transportation options will be shared in the coming months.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County Public Schools announced that all 2026 graduations will be held at the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus to lower costs and provide an indoor setting—graduation ceremonies will start from May 28 and continue through June 12 while transportation details are shared later.  MoCo360
  • Rolling Terrace Elementary School received a $1,500 Tommy Wilson Memorial Grant from SHAPE America last month to buy adapted P.E. equipment for students with disabilities—this funding will remove barriers and support an inclusive physical education program.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Council approved new procedures to give federal workers displaced since Jan. 1 priority on county job applications—candidates must submit proof of their status; the regulation will take effect Friday following a law signed on July 24 by County Executive Marc Elrich.  MoCo360
  • Amid the ongoing government shutdown, Rep. Delaney pledged to fight for full back pay for federal workers during a recent telephone town hall that included other lawmakers who confirmed that the law guarantees reimbursement. She noted that unions have already filed lawsuits and she will donate her pay if elected officials do not act—insisting that federal employees receive all their wages when the government reopens.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Today in Montgomery County, the Education and Culture Committee meets at 1:30 p.m. to review MCPS plans and the Board of Education gathers at 5:30 p.m. in Rockville. Other events include the Commission for Women meeting from 7 to 9 p.m.—Nourish Now holds a food distribution at 1:30 p.m. in Gaithersburg and the Hispanic Leadership Awards Gala is set for Oct. 16 at the Hyatt Regency in Bethesda.  Montgomery Community Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • Children’s National Hospital has earned a spot on the U.S. News 2025-26 Honor Roll as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the Mid-Atlantic, showing top scores in neonatology, neurology and cancer among other areas.
