BUSINESS NEWS

  • McCormick & Company, which makes Maryland’s iconic Old Bay, said on Tuesday that rising tariffs from global spice imports have created a $140M annualized cost increase. The firm said it is managing pricing carefully & warned that higher costs for consumers may come by the end of the year.  WUSA9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Principal Dacia Sewell (Forest Oak Middle School) celebrated National Principals Month in a Q&A that highlighted her success in lowering suspensions from 7.9% to 1.7% and increasing exits from the English Language Development program. She offered clear advice to new principals and explained how strong community ties help the school support its students.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • William Wirt Middle School is closing due to a water pipe failure—officials say it is unclear how long repairs will take.  WUSA9
  • Montgomery County officials presented three proposals at Bethesda Chevy Chase High School as a plan to redraw school boundaries that will change where children attend classes starting in 2027. The proposals, aimed at easing overcrowding in at least 12 high schools, also include projects such as reopening Charles Woodward High in Rockville — adding about 3,000 new seats.  FOX 5 DC

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WSSC Water held its grand opening Tuesday for a $38M expanded water quality lab in Silver Spring — the lab now tests for forever chemicals like PFAS more quickly and with greater capacity, cutting processing time to under an hour while planning to boost tests from 500,000 to 750,000 annually over the next two decades.  WTOP
  • Metro will shut down Bethesda, Medical Center, and Grosvenor-Strathmore stops on the Red Line for two months next summer—from July 6 through September 6—to perform rehabilitation work and connect Bethesda to a future Purple Line station. Metro will also shut down Crystal City on the Blue and Yellow Lines on 10 weekends for station improvements that include a new entrance at 18th St. S. and Crystal Drive.  WJLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC has updated its COVID-19 vaccine guidance to require shared clinical decision-making between patients and providers—this change asks health care workers to discuss the vaccine's risks and benefits before administering it. Montgomery County officials added that local protocols let pharmacists vaccinate without a prescription and insurers will cover the shot as before.  WTOP
