  • Shouk closed its last remaining fast-casual plant-based restaurant on Randolph Road this week, leaving the Rockville storefront empty and social media offline. Windridge Vineyard won Best in Show for its 2022 Cabernet Franc at the Maryland Governor’s Cup Wine Competition and Dash In will open a new convenience store with fueling stations, a made-to-order kitchen, and a beverage wall—new options coming to Gaithersburg in May.  MoCo360
  • Rockville’s clinical-stage biotech firm OncoC4 Inc. secured $50M to advance cancer and neurodegenerative treatments near Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center — the company, founded in 2020, announced the funding to boost its research efforts. Mayor Monique Ashton gave her State of the City address at Glenview Mansion and discussed affordable housing and business growth while changes on Ellsworth Drive led to a gelato bar closure and a gym relocating.  MoCo360
  • Potomac’s Bethesda Bagels will open its new store at Cabin John Village on Monday morning at 6:30 a.m.—the shop has a 2,800-square-foot space with a large window that lets customers watch bagels being rolled and baked.   • Singer Lizz Wright will take the stage Sunday to perform her blend of soul, jazz, gospel and folk at the Strathmore in Bethesda—an event scheduled amid a government shutdown that will reconnect her with long-time local audiences and venue staff who recall her past support during difficult times.  WTOP

  • Montgomery College is helping students complete the new FAFSA applications to ease the process of securing college funding (a program designed to support local students).  WUSA9

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland officials said they would help residents pay for health care after federal tax credits were not renewed by expanding state insurance subsidies through Maryland Health Connection (250,000 eligible users) to ease rising costs; Gov.   • County council approved water cremation today so funeral homes can offer a new green option for families. The method uses water, heat, and alkaline chemicals to break down bodies and is allowed for pets—reducing energy use compared to flame cremation.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Former county councilmember Hans Riemer endorsed councilmember Andrew Friedson for county executive on October 3—saying Friedson listens to the community and knows how to tackle housing challenges in the 2026 race.  MoCo360
