Good morning, Rockville. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local restaurants are offering deals to federal workers facing the government shutdown, with free shots, discounted cocktails, BOGO tacos and $10 meals for those showing a valid government ID. Deals from Duke’s Grocery, The Dish & Dram, RASA, Taco Bamba and Thompson restaurants — which serve those affected — run until the shutdown ends.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools hired the law firm Morgan—Lewis and Bockius to investigate potential personnel wrongdoing over nearly 13,000 outdated background checks and missing Child Protective Services checks, following an August report that raised safety concerns. The district said it will share more details with the council once the fall investigation is complete.  MoCo360
  • Federal and county officials visited the Upcounty Regional Services Center in Germantown on October 2 to show how the government shutdown following a Senate failure to pass a continuing resolution has led to furloughs and cuts in health care funds. Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich and U.S. Rep. McClain Delaney noted that diminished Medicaid enrollment and local service support may add pressure on the community — urging quick state and federal action.  MoCo360
  • Today, as fall leaf season starts, Montgomery County’s law bans gas-powered blowers and forces landscapers to use electric ones that many say do not work well — a change that has cost some thousands of dollars. Councilmembers plan to remove the photo requirement used to enforce the ban to ease fears among Hispanic and immigrant workers, with a public hearing set later this month.  WJLA
  • On Wednesday, several people visited MVA offices to pick up new ID cards with a butterfly logo that shows hidden disabilities. The law—named for Eric Carpenter-Grantham, who has high-functioning autism—was backed by local officials and disability advocates to help police recognize those with invisible disabilities.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County Police are lowering the education barrier by partnering with UMGC to let recruits earn college credits while training—this change comes as the force seeks to replace 186 officers lost to retirement. Applicants must be 21 by graduation, and the 10-month academy program offers credits at no cost.  FOX 5 DC

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, six MCPS high school football games will be played as key matchups include undefeated Churchill hosting Quince Orchard—both teams known for strong defense and scoring abilities—while Good Counsel aims to end a two-game skid. Additional contests featuring Sherwood, Paint Branch, Blake, and Wheaton will test teams’ recent winning and losing trends in tightly watched county games.  MoCo360
