- ➤ SERVPRO Team Gutierrez, a family-owned restoration company in Rockville serving Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, was named SERVPRO Franchise of the Year from more than 2,300 franchises. The award comes as the company celebrates its 45th anniversary and honors its legacy that began in 1980—when it was founded by CEO Jorge Gutierrez’s father-in-law, Eric Thompson. - ➤ Students and their mentors launched a 10-by-10 cm CubeSat into space Sunday—part of SilverSat, a program started by engineer David Copeland to engage local middle and high school students. - ➤ Montgomery County officials are reassuring community members after federal immigration enforcement arrested two men near a Silver Spring middle school on Sept. 10—children and parents arriving for morning drop-off were unsettled by the incident. WTOP
- ➤ The union representing Montgomery County sheriff's deputies issued a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Maxwell Uy last week because more than 30 deputies left and former staffers said they were overworked—union leaders now support his opponent, retired chief assistant sheriff Will Milam, for the June primary. - ➤ Maryland has joined the Northeast Public Health Collaborative — a group of states that set their own vaccine guidelines to counter earlier federal restrictions. State health officials said the coalition, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York City, uses scientific evidence to help ensure broad vaccine access.
