  • SERVPRO Team Gutierrez, a family-owned restoration company in Rockville serving Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, was named SERVPRO Franchise of the Year from more than 2,300 franchises. The award comes as the company celebrates its 45th anniversary and honors its legacy that began in 1980—when it was founded by CEO Jorge Gutierrez’s father-in-law, Eric Thompson.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and their mentors launched a 10-by-10 cm CubeSat into space Sunday—part of SilverSat, a program started by engineer David Copeland to engage local middle and high school students. The satellite will tweet photos beginning mid-November and operate for two to six months before burning up in space.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools uses ParentSquare, ParentVUE, Remind and Canvas to help families, students and staff stay informed and connected — a new video details how these digital platforms work together and is available in Spanish, French, Chinese, Vietnamese, Amharic, Korean and Portuguese.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County officials are reassuring community members after federal immigration enforcement arrested two men near a Silver Spring middle school on Sept. 10—children and parents arriving for morning drop-off were unsettled by the incident.  WTOP
  • The union representing Montgomery County sheriff's deputies issued a vote of no confidence in Sheriff Maxwell Uy last week because more than 30 deputies left and former staffers said they were overworked—union leaders now support his opponent, retired chief assistant sheriff Will Milam, for the June primary. Sheriff Uy said he finds the claims mischaracterized and will remain in the race for re-election.  FOX 5 DC
  • Sheriff Maxwell Uy dismissed union claims of a toxic work culture and retaliation as meritless—about 80% of union members voted no confidence last week—while union leader Gino Renne urged him to step aside; with union-backed Will Milam running against him in the 2026 sheriff race, Uy said he will continue improving recruitment and staffing efforts in his department.  MoCo360
  • Delegate Pamela Queen will serve out her term but will not run for re-election as she plans to retire from the General Assembly and her teaching job—her work included a law changing parole decisions. Gaithersburg Councilmember Robert Wu is seriously considering a House seat run in District 39 and is expected to announce his plans in a matter of weeks—if elected, he will focus on housing, education, and veterans’ issues.  MoCo360

HEALTH NEWS

  • Maryland has joined the Northeast Public Health Collaborative — a group of states that set their own vaccine guidelines to counter earlier federal restrictions. State health officials said the coalition, which includes Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and New York City, uses scientific evidence to help ensure broad vaccine access.  WTOP

  • Walt Whitman High School junior Andie Greenberg—ranked No.6 among Maryland girls—won the AJGA-USGA President’s Leadership Award on Aug. 28 for her work in disability advocacy and after caddying at the U.S. Adaptive Open in Rockville.  MoCo360
