CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County police arrested Duane Moore—accused of first-degree murder, use of a firearm, and assault charges—as part of the investigation into the fatal shooting of Nathaniel Potts in a Silver Spring apartment parking lot on Dec. 2nd.  WUSA9
  • Rockville High School went on secure status on September 3 after a swatting call falsely reported a gun at 1:55 p.m.—the lockdown ended at 2:25 p.m., classes were dismissed five minutes after 2:30 p.m., and nearby Meadow Hall Elementary secured its building out of caution.  MoCo360
  • A Silver Spring man named Jason Duane Moore, 47, was arrested on Tuesday on first-degree murder and other charges—after detectives linked him to the Dec. 2 homicide of 29-year-old Nathaniel Potts at the Summit Hills apartment complex where Potts died from gunshot wounds.  WJLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Thomas Taylor said Montgomery County Public Schools' new MCPS Hub+ payroll system has delayed pay for some employees and may face more issues in coming months—staff who have not received full pay raised concerns. The system was launched in December for $33.4 million and continues to show errors as officials work to fix the problems.  MoCo360
  • MCPS will host public boundary study meetings in October for the reopening of Woodward High School and the opening and expansion of Crown and Damascus High Schools for the 2027-2028 school year. Sessions will be held online and in-person and include maps, surveys, and an interactive tool — key sessions are set for Oct. 6, 7, 8, 13, 14, and 15.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Rear Admiral Matthew T. Pottenburgh visited four MCPS NJROTC high schools—Paint Branch, John F. Kennedy, Gaithersburg and Seneca Valley—on Aug. 27 to inspire cadets at the new school year, answering their questions and showing drill demonstrations. He also encouraged students to consider Navy career paths and apply for scholarships.  Montgomery County Public Schools

  • Progressive Maryland and Working Families Party endorsed Montgomery Council Vice President Will Jawando yesterday in his bid for county executive as he faces Councilmembers Andrew Friedson and Evan Glass after Marc Elrich became term-limited. Jawando said he would focus on affordable housing — living wage, improved schools and labor rights — to help local families and encourage new business.  Montgomery Community Media
