Good morning, Rockville. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A group of friends from Montgomery County who started volunteering at Ronald McDonald House as children has grown into over 60 high school students from 14 schools that meet monthly in Baltimore to prepare and deliver meals plus perform for families staying there. Senior Grace Xiao from Holton-Arms School said the effort began with a small gift drive and has since expanded to include regular meal service and entertainment.  WTOP
  • On Thursday night, county officials, family and friends gathered at Rockville’s 10th annual International Drug Overdose Awareness Day Remembrance Ceremony to remember 83 residents lost to addiction during 2024. The event, led by Anwan Glover, featured a candlelight vigil and resource fair while Mayor Monique Ashton said addiction is a chronic disease and promised a diversion center with 20 beds — a sign of hope, healing and empowerment.  Montgomery Community Media

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A massive fire on Churchill Downs Road in Montgomery County left five people displaced as neighbors and over 70 emergency crews worked for more than three hours to control the blaze—fortunately, all escaped without injury.  FOX 5 DC

CRIME NEWS

  • Eugene Teodor Gligor, 45, pleaded guilty to killing Leslie Preer earlier this year and was sentenced by a Montgomery County judge in Rockville to 22 years in prison—he will serve five years of supervised probation and must get mental health treatment and avoid contact with Preer's family.  FOX 5 DC

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS introduced a new method on August 29 to assess the condition of its more than 200 school buildings for renovation priorities and will use a facility condition index depleted value as the main measure; the updated plan also weighs educational adequacy, poverty data and building capacity. The district will hold community sessions in early September — these meetings will explain how the new data will guide future repair and upgrade projects.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Fire officials are urging residents to prepare a file of life folder with key health details so that first responders can give proper care during emergencies — residents can call 311 to receive one within a few days. The folder can be hung on a refrigerator to be easily seen in an emergency.  WTOP

HEALTH NEWS

  • Montgomery County health officials said updated vaccines for COVID-19, the flu and RSV will be available in September as National Immunization Awareness Month ends. They explained that new FDA rules approved on Aug 27 limit COVID-19 shots to people 65 and older or those with high risk conditions—while some health groups worry the changes may cause confusion about vaccine safety.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Maryland seniors may lose their Medicare Advantage supplemental benefits this fall as insurers plan to exit the market due to high hospital costs and the end of a state grant. Major carriers including Aetna and Humana have not yet announced new plans, and experts warn that the change could disrupt care (such as dental, vision, and transportation assistance) for many beneficiaries.  MoCo360

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Viva White Oak mixed-use development received a $4 million grant from the Maryland Department of Housing & Community Development as announced by Gov. Wes Moore on Wednesday.
