CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A man who intentionally drove his car into an officer was sentenced to 22 years (the crash cost the officer his legs) and his actions led to a new Maryland law (aimed at preventing similar incidents). WUSA9
- ➤ On August 25, police arrested Alexis Alfaro, a 16-year-old from Silver Spring, after a robbery turned stabbing on Clarksburg Road when he tried to take a teen's belongings and then attacked with a knife— the victim was taken to a local hospital with light wounds. Montgomery Community Media
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ County Executive Marc Elrich will hold 12 budget forums starting Sept. 8 to collect public feedback for the fiscal year 2027 spending plan (most sessions are available both in person and virtually) as he prepares his final proposal before his term ends. The County Council is set to review his recommendations and must adopt the final budget by June 1. MoCo360
- ➤ Montgomery County police have partnered with University of Maryland Global Campus to offer up to $60,000 off college degree programs for police officers & family members to help fill about 180 vacancies. The program allows officers to apply academy training and military service as college credits and is expected to boost both recruitment and retention. WTOP
- ➤ Izola Shaw declared her candidacy for the Montgomery County Council District 3 seat on August 28 after serving on Rockville City Council since 2023. She is running to succeed term-limited Sidney Katz by emphasizing progressive policies—affordable housing and public campaign finance—and her campaign may face a contest against Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman.
