Good morning, Rockville. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 28th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Raphael Mayorga was sentenced to 22 years and 60 days in prison after being found guilty of 13 charges linked to his October crash on I-270 that struck Sgt. Patrick Kepp, who lost both legs. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools reported gains on standardized tests for the 2024–2025 school year, with 57% of students reaching proficiency in English Language Arts and 35.7% in math, along with improvements in reading and science compared to earlier years. The data also showed Black and Hispanic/Latino students scored lower than their white and Asian peers — a gap the district is aiming to close.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A judge on Monday granted the Bethesda African Cemetery Coalition until February to determine if the River Road site once served as a burial ground for freed and enslaved Montgomery County residents — a decision that gives local historians more time to review the evidence.  MoCo360
