EDUCATION NEWS

  • Colin Kaepernick, a civil rights activist and former NFL quarterback, spoke at the MCPS summer meeting on August 14 to share ideas on fairness and new technology for learning. He discussed his new company Lumi and took photos with staff — an event that left school leaders inspired.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County Public Schools are updating the Student Code of Conduct for the 2025-2026 school year to simplify rules and create a standard process for investigating incidents—promoting learning from mistakes and rebuilding trust.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Montgomery County Public Schools will hold its first-ever Student Transition Day on Aug. 25—a day for students to practice their school routine and ease into a new school level.   • Montgomery County Public Schools is updating background checks after an Inspector General report found issues dating to 2019 — the plan speeds clearance for new hires, re-fingerprints staff hired before 2019 using mobile units starting Sept.4, and will issue new badges to show screening status. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts say the invasive spotted lanternfly population in Montgomery County grew significantly last summer and is expected to rise until it drops in about three years—this insect harms trees and crops, including grape vineyards.   • WorkSource Montgomery is set to open the FWCC Mobilize Montgomery center for displaced federal workers this fall at the Wheaton American Job Center—11510 Georgia Ave—where they will offer resume help, job search guidance, and financial advice.   • Montgomery County Police will provide free catalytic converter etching at Fitzgerald Subaru and Hyundai—11411 Rockville Pike in North Bethesda—on Sunday, August 17th from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. as part of its Etch and Catch Program that will mark, paint the converters, and offer window decals to help deter theft.  Montgomery Community Media
