EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools face scrutiny after a report found many staff were not fully background checked—12,000 staff were not in the FBI system and nearly 5,000 with child contact did not get a Child Protective Services screening—and Superintendent Thomas Taylor said pandemic delays and slow state processing mean a public meeting will be held on Sept. 26 while the County Council asks for a written update before school begins Aug. 26.  FOX 5 DC

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An Interstate Commission report warns that rising temperatures and hot drought will reduce Potomac River flows by up to 49% — even though precipitation is expected to increase by 16% by 2099. Washington Aqueduct and other local water agencies are updating models to decide when to release reservoir backups to secure Rockville's drinking water supply.  WTOP
  • Montgomery County officials warned that spotted lanternflies have arrived and urged residents to inspect their vehicles for hitchhiking pests—official advice intended to slow a projected population rise. The insects feed on many trees including the invasive Tree of Heaven and can leave behind egg masses that cause a sticky mess.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • WSSC Water reported a water main break near the Bethesda Metro station on Monday night that closed southbound Wisconsin Avenue and two westbound turn lanes on East West Highway.
