  • Montgomery County Public Schools is hosting National Night Out today at several sites, including a Rockville event at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to promote neighborhood safety & community partnerships.  Montgomery County Public Schools

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday night, a Capital View home in Silver Spring caught fire, causing roughly $350,000 in damage and displacing a family of two and their pet—fire crews controlled the blaze 45 minutes after arriving after the fire spread from improperly stored grilling materials that ignited near a parked hybrid car.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County firefighters rescued a 12-year-old boy and a three-year-old child from flood waters near Bradley Boulevard and Holly Mercy Lane on July 31 and held an emotional reunion on Sunday as the boy’s father donated $10,000 to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue—thanking the responders for their swift action.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools had nearly 13,000 of its 25,800 employees with outdated criminal history checks and almost 5,000 people with unsupervised access to students had not had a required CPS check—according to a report by the county’s Office of the Inspector General. The district said it will soon begin a new background screening action plan and re-fingerprint employees not in the FBI’s Rap Back program by the end of the 2025‑2026 school year.  MoCo360
  • A new Inspector General report said that over 12,000 Montgomery County Public Schools employees were not added to the FBI’s Rap Back system and nearly 5,000 people with student access did not have required Child Protective Services checks—county officials scheduled an oversight meeting on Sept. 26 to review these gaps. The school district has launched a tracking portal, will re-fingerprint affected employees, and plans to issue new ID badges as part of its Background Screening Action Plan.  Montgomery Community Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County officials warned residents that spotted lanternflies will increase in numbers over the next three to five years, especially in areas like Damascus and Brookeville. The insects feed on tree sap and leave a sticky honeydew that can cause a mess on parked cars—residents are advised to inspect trees and remove egg masses to help slow the spread.  WJLA
