Good morning, Rockville. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of July.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Montgomery County fire engine became disabled today in Silver Spring when it drove into flash floodwaters during thunderstorms — officials said the damaged engine, only months in service, may be a total loss costing between $500,000 — $750,000 and is the second new vehicle lost to flooding this year.  MoCo360

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools hosted its Drive For Supplies event at Parkland Middle School where over 1,160 people picked up school supplies and 773 boxes of food were given out—donated items came from more than 110 schools and offices sorted by 46 volunteers—and the event was organized with partners Learn Shop, Inc., the Upcounty Hub, and Rise N Shine Foundation.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Montgomery County Public Schools will change its grading rules for the new school year starting August 26 by using averages instead of rounding up grades. Some students expressed worry about the impact on their mental health and said they did not get enough details—many raised their concerns at a recent board meeting.  MoCo360
  • MCPS is recommending that countywide magnet programs be replaced with regional themed programs—if approved by the school board, competitive programs at Montgomery Blair and Richard Montgomery high schools will be phased out by the 2027-2028 school year. The plan divides high schools into six regions and lets current students finish their programs while new offerings are introduced.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PJM warned that state policies cutting fossil fuel supply have led to a jump in capacity auction prices for 2026—from $28.92 per megawatt to $329.17 per megawatt—raising concerns that green energy plans may cause higher electricity costs. Gov. Wes Moore said his approach gives ratepayers more options even as critics warn that shutting down old plants too soon could worsen bills.  WJLA
  • Rockville City Council voted 5-2 on Monday to reject a rent control proposal—halting plans for rent stabilization measures this year. Developers praised the decision — while renter advocates warned it could lead to evictions and higher housing costs.  MoCo360
  • Rockville attorney Marilyn Pierre filed on July 11 to run for a Montgomery County Circuit Court seat in the 2026 election; this is her fifth campaign as she points to the over-incarceration of young Black men as a key issue. She criticizes the state judge vetting process (which she argues favors connections over merit) and calls for more restorative justice practices (that could reduce repeat offenses) in the courts.  MoCo360
