CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives from Montgomery County Police arrested two teenagers in Rockville on July 22 after community members identified them from surveillance photos following their May 24 attempted theft of a gray Toyota RAV4 from a rideshare driver and detectives are still asking for help to identify a third suspect — anyone with information should contact Crime Solvers.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Former counselor Patrick Estrella (77) was convicted on Wednesday by a Montgomery County jury for sexually abusing 8- and 9-year-old girls at a Rockville summer camp at Luxmanor Elementary School after a teen volunteer recorded his actions on a cell phone, and he now faces up to 70 years in prison with sentencing set for Oct. 24.  MoCo360

  • Earlier this summer, rising junior Kian Dhawan from Montgomery Blair High School earned a gold medal at Harvard during the USA Biolympiad National Finals—his team won the national championship and will represent the U.S. at the International Biology Olympiad in the Philippines this month.  Montgomery County Public Schools

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County Council approved a zoning change measure Tuesday by a vote of 8 to 3 to allow more housing options along transit corridors and support workforce housing. Supporters say the change will help keep residents local while opponents worry it will alter neighborhood character — the measure takes effect November 1 and a public hearing is set for September 16.  MoCo360
  • On July 23rd, the county council met with Health and Human Services and Education and Culture committees to review childcare bills following County Executive Marc Elrich's proposal to cut key early childcare services. Councilmember Will Jawando and officials expressed concerns about impacts on the childcare industry—no final decisions were made at the meeting.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The Montgomery County Board of Education dedicated its board room at 15 W. Gude Drive in February to honor the late Patricia O’Neill for her 23 years of service to MCPS.   • Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said the heavy flooding along Sligo Creek Parkway that led to water rescues shows a new normal with storms that bring rapid rises in water levels—county officials are adding five more flood sensors in flood-prone areas and urge residents to stay off flooded roads. The county is updating its systems to better warn people and protect lives during future storms.  WTOP
