GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Fields of Rockville apartment complex did not complete repairs for a black substance on its walls despite receiving an extension and was fined by the city for failing to meet code requirements.   • On Tuesday, Montgomery County Council passed Expedited Bill 10-25 to give laid-off federal employees a hiring preference, and the measure now goes to County Executive Marc Elrich who will sign it on July 24 at the Isiah “Ike” Leggett Executive Office Building — a step to support local workers and economic stability.  WUSA9
  • Governor Wes Moore announced on Tuesday a new Maryland Benefits One Application that lets residents apply for food, cash, and emergency help through a single system—averaging 28 minutes per application while linking programs like Medicaid, SNAP, TANF, and WIC.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Council is considering Bill 19-25 to allow landscaping businesses to use gas-powered leaf blowers from Oct 1 through Dec 31 — the change is meant to help them meet busy leaf removal needs despite the cost of switching to electric models. Poolesville Mayor Jim Brown and other business owners shared their views, and the Transportation and Environment Committee will hold a work session on July 28 with a final vote after the August recess.  WTOP
