CRIME NEWS

  • An 8-year-old child with autism, reported missing on Wednesday at 9:18 p.m., was rescued by Montgomery County police + good Samaritans after she was seen running through traffic near Middlebrook and Frederick Roads and safely reunited with her mother.  WJLA
  • Montgomery County police are seeking family members of 46-year-old Godofredo Gonzalez Zelaya, who was killed near Frederick Road and Indianola Drive in Derwood just before 1 a.m. on June 18— the driver fled the scene but was later arrested for DUI near Shady Grove Road.  WJLA
  • Montgomery County police rescued an 8-year-old girl with autism seen running through heavy traffic near Middlebrook Road and Frederick Road—she was soon reunited with her family as officers reminded residents of county autism support services.  WUSA9

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ethio-American Chamber of Commerce is hosting the African Roots and Cultures Event on June 22 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center—visitors will enjoy performances, a children’s corner, food samples and a marketplace sharing African business stories.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Montgomery County Planning Board will review plans Thursday for a 334-foot tunnel under Georgia Avenue that will help people safely access the Forest Glen Metro station. If approved, the county will begin building in fiscal year 2028—beginning July 1—with a $44.5 million budget.  MoCo360
  • Starting Sunday, Metrorail will extend weekend hours from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m.—Metro is introducing new Silver Line routes with added stops and a revised Metro map to guide riders, while Red Line trains will run every four minutes during weekday rush hours starting Monday.  WUSA9
  • Rockville council members Izola Shaw and David Myles plan to introduce a motion to debate rent stabilization in an upcoming meeting after about 30 residents urged action at a June 16 session—residents shared that rent increases of 8% to 17% are stressing households and warned against officials seen as favoring personal gain over community needs.  Montgomery Community Media
