  • At Rockville City Hall Monday night, community members rallied with 'Rent Stabilization Now!' signs as tenant leader Grant Samms warned that steep rent hikes force families to move and disrupt schooling — Mayor Ashton outlined plans for more transparency in rental fees and future housing code meetings. The protest reflects ongoing local demand for rent control while Rockville remains exempt from Montgomery County's 6% rent cap.  WJLA

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockville police investigated the death of an adult male from a gunshot wound on June 14 in the 600 block of Blandford Street after officers arrived at 7:51 a.m. for a welfare check—this latest incident marks the city's third shooting in recent days and follows arrests of teenage suspects using ghost guns.  Montgomery Community Media

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Colored Pencil Society of America opened its 33rd international juried exhibition at the Mansion at Strathmore on June 14, showing lifelike colored pencil art by U.S. and international artists that runs through August 2. The gallery is free and open Tuesday to Friday from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.—a free tour is on June 28 at 1 p.m. and an artist convention is set for July 31 to August 1.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson Reyes, a fifth grader safety patrol at Rolling Terrace Elementary, saved a child's life by pulling the child from a moving bus during dismissal on October 15, 2024. He received the School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Award on June 11 (only four students nationwide earned the honor) and was praised by school staff and his family for his quick thinking.  Montgomery County Public Schools

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County's Black Hill Regional Park features Little Seneca Lake — a 505-acre reservoir formed by three creeks that supplies emergency water for the region — which offers outdoor summer activities. Visitors can rent kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, rowboats and pedal boats for $15 an hour or $55 a day while observing local wildlife like beavers and bald eagles.  WJLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County Councilmembers will introduce a bill today to raise the tax credit for childcare improvements from $3,000 to $10,000 to help ease a childcare crisis after a sharp drop in licensed providers—large childcare centers that were once exempt will also become eligible. A public hearing for the proposed legislation is set for July 8.  Montgomery Community Media

  • D.C. Health confirmed that an international traveler from Dulles Airport carried measles and rode the Metro on June 8 in Montgomery County (including a Silver Line train and Metrobus) and again on June 12 in D.C. Officials warned that anyone without two measles vaccine doses should contact their provider if they were near these transit rides.  Montgomery Community Media
  • The CDC is urging summer camps to verify measles immunity by checking vaccination records or proof of previous infection—pediatrician Dr. Alexandra Yonts warned that unvaccinated children face high risks of outbreaks in the close-contact environment of camp settings.  WTOP
