On Tuesday afternoon, the Board of Education approved a $3.595 billion budget that is 8.2% higher than last year — the plan adds 659 special education positions, 47 language support roles, and 45 new security positions.

The budget also boosts salaries and allocates $50 million from reserves to support retiree benefits — helping to keep funds focused on classroom support without raising taxes.

Montgomery County police struggled with recruitment and understaffing as chief Marc Yamada said the department remained committed to safety amid challenges and launched new initiatives for officer mental health.

The department, which registered a 14.8% vacancy rate, now features a wellness room and a partnership with Harbor of Grace Enhanced Recovery Center—steps designed to support its officers.
