  • Montgomery County police officer Cody Hobbs was not charged after he fatally shot Melvin Omar Chávez Paz on September 24 at 7:53 p.m. when agents responded to a 911 call on Janet Road in Wheaton, as Chávez Paz—seen leaving a backyard with a rectangular silver object in hand—received seven gunshot wounds and was declared dead at the scene with a 0.34% blood alcohol level, the Maryland Attorney General said.  Montgomery Community Media
  • A former Wootton High student was sentenced on May 28th to 10 years in prison with only 12 months to be served—he was convicted of planning school shootings at Wootton High and Lakewood Elementary—and he must complete a mental health treatment plan, serve probation with community service, and attend biweekly court check-ins with his next appearance set for Sept. 25.  FOX 5 DC
  • A Montgomery County police officer, Cpl. Cody Hobbs, will not face charges for fatally shooting a 31-year-old Wheaton man in September 2024 after a Maryland Attorney General investigation found insufficient evidence of a crime+ body camera footage and 911 calls backed the decision.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An independent audit by the Attorney General revealed that nearly half of 87 cases reviewed from 2003 to 2019 by OCME should have been ruled as homicides—including 5 cases in Montgomery County—which shows systemic shortcomings in autopsy documentation and incident reporting. Montgomery officials said they will further review the findings to determine next steps in addressing these issues.  Montgomery Community Media
