- ➤ Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced that after a multi-year review of 36 police custody cases, including Anton Black’s 2018 death, his case was reclassified as a homicide. - ➤ Two Montgomery College students Danae 'Samantha' Flores-Tene and Rodin Ruiz were awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, joining 90 winners chosen from over 1,600 applicants—an honor that offers up to $55,000 annually to complete a bachelor’s degree. - ➤ Montgomery County officials are boosting food recovery efforts as rising food costs leave many families without enough nutritious food. Over 40% of residents are at risk for food insecurity and local partners are offering grants until May 30 to help with food storage and transportation. WTOP
- ➤ The Montgomery County Council is set to vote on the FY26 operating budget on May 22—after dropping a retroactive plan to raise the income tax from 3.2% to 3.3% that was expected to boost revenue by about $70 to $80 million, with $50 million from a retiree health fund added to help meet school funding needs. - ➤ Maryland lawmakers U.S. Rep. Kweisi Mfume and Sen. Chris Van Hollen introduced a bill on Monday to award Henrietta Lacks the Congressional Gold Medal — honoring her role in medical breakthroughs.
