- ➤ A man died after being struck by a silver Toyota Camry at 5:31 a.m. on Wednesday on Watkins Mill Road near Route 355 in Gaithersburg— the driver stayed at the scene to attempt life-saving measures and the Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating while roads were briefly closed. WJLA

- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools are warning parents about a dangerous TikTok Chromebook Challenge—students are damaging school-issued devices by inserting metal into charging ports or piercing batteries. - ➤ A Bayard Rustin Elementary School fifth grader won first place in the 2025 Young Authors’ Contest hosted by the State of Maryland Literacy Association — her story 'Freedom' was inspired by a fourth-grade assignment on the Underground Railroad. - ➤ Math resource teacher Lourdes Ferrer of Gaithersburg High School has spent 11 years guiding students and colleagues and believes that having someone believe in you is key. - ➤ Vy Bao, a 12th grade student at Blake High School, won the MELLFIN Scholarship Award of $1,000 and became the first student at her school to earn this honor as an emerging multilingual learner dedicated to college and career training. Bao also leads the Vietnamese Nextgen Initiative Youth Program — guiding newly arrived immigrant youth — and hopes her achievement inspires others to pursue their educational goals. - ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools has been named one of six nationwide to receive the 2025 National Gold Ribbon School Districts in Service Learning honor from Youth Service America—recognizing the district's focus on student leadership and community service as students earn the service hours needed for graduation. - ➤ At a county meeting Tuesday, councilmembers Sidney Katz and Gabe Albornoz introduced a zoning amendment to ban cannabis dispensaries within 100 feet of residential buildings and lots zoned for residential use — a proposal enabled by recent state law changes. A public hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 17, and if approved, the change will take effect 20 days after the council adopts it. MoCo360
- ➤ The Montgomery County Council voted unanimously to reject county executive Marc Elrich’s plan to raise the income tax from 3.2% to 3.3%. Instead, council members backed a plan to use money from the school system’s retiree health fund to cover nearly all of the schools' budget for next year — though some say the temporary fix may need a closer look.
