EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools announced a new cell phone policy that will take effect in the 2025-26 school year, requiring elementary and middle school students to keep their devices off during the school day while high school students may use them only at lunch and between classes—critics argue this change gives high schoolers too much leeway and leaves discipline details unclear.  WJLA
  • Twenty Montgomery County Public School students were named National Merit Scholars and each will receive a $2,500 award for college — 17 year old Quinn C. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Metro will launch its full redesign of the bus network on June 29 that will change routes, schedules, stops and even bus names with letters like A for Arlington and Alexandria—based on feedback from over 45,000 people, the redesign is expected to add more service and attract nearly 13,000 more weekday trips.  WUSA9
  • The Montgomery County Council announced Tuesday that it would fund 99.8% of the MCPS $3.65 billion budget request for fiscal year 2026 by reallocating funds from the retiree health benefit trust (providing $25 million in both fiscal years 2025 and 2026) to avoid raising income taxes. Council leaders said the move aims to address current health benefit costs while allowing time for long-term planning.  MoCo360

HEALTH NEWS
