COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rainbow Place Shelter will move next month as Rockville Presbyterian Church sells its property; the 44-year-old nonprofit, which provides 28 beds for women, is seeking a new site to continue its meals, showers, and laundry services.  WUSA9

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Rock Terrace School explored future careers during Career Day, where community professionals shared work experiences (including volunteer and paid roles) in fields such as transportation, education, and animal care. The event inspired students and families to explore new pathways to independence.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • MCPS Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor warned Tuesday that proposed $30 million to $90 million cuts could eliminate about 100 positions per $10 million (a reduction not seen in decades) and impact student support services.   • Brooke Grove Elementary School held Clash of the Readers competition for 4th and 5th graders, with 82 participants and 15 staff and family supporters during a quiz-style event in the gymnasium; the Reading Rockets won by one point and school leaders plan to expand the program to more schools.  Montgomery County Public Schools

  • Maryland officials plan to expand the online reservation system from five parks to eight, including Seneca Creek in Gaithersburg, with new QR code payments likely starting this summer after board review on May 20.  MoCo360

HEALTH NEWS

  • Health officials are monitoring two Maryland residents who may have been exposed to Hantavirus after a flight carried a cruise ship passenger from the M/V Hondius (the risk remains very low) as experts track the situation.  WUSA9

  • TMGOC Ventures, a Florida-based investment manager, purchased the 455-room Bethesda North Marriott Hotel at 5701 Marinelli Road Friday — attached to a Montgomery County-owned conference center managed by Marriott.  MoCo360

SPORTS NEWS

  • Maryland officials are considering moving the Preakness to three weeks after the Kentucky Derby to give horses more rest and improve race outcomes. The change is expected to roll out in 2027 when the event returns to Pimlico Race Course.  WTOP
