- ➤ Montgomery County will launch a free summer mountain biking program for children ages six and up. Montgomery Parks will guide rides on local park trails and teach bike safety, riding skills, and basic maintenance. WJLA

- ➤ Montgomery County Police are searching for a 27-year-old man with autism who went missing Friday at 7:00 p.m. near the Pike & Rose shopping mall in Rockville—if you have information, call 301-279-8000. WJLA
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MCPS will update its student code of conduct for the 2025-2026 school year to stress student accountability and school safety—changes will include tougher consequences for infractions like bomb threats and recorded fights and require both traditional punishments and restorative practices. The district will also implement supports such as re-entry plans and meetings for students returning after discipline. MoCo360
- ➤ MCPS Superintendent Thomas Taylor said at a Monday meeting that he planned to shift decision-making closer to schools—moving away from the district’s so-called ivory tower mentality—and improve special education and academic standards. Mario Loiederman Middle School held a ribbon-cutting event on May 9 to mark one year of the REACH Urban Farm—created in partnership with the Charles Koiner Conservancy—to support local food production and climate resiliency for students, staff, and community members. - ➤ Today at 11:15 a.m. the Montgomery County Council will hold a public hearing at the Stella Werner Council Office Building to hear public comments on a proposed income tax increase from 3.2% to 3.3% to fund a $7.65B operating budget and a $5M request to accelerate funding for relocatable classrooms for MCPS. Councilmembers will also introduce a zoning text amendment that aims to keep licensed cannabis dispensaries at least 100 feet from homes—residents can share their views before final decisions are made. - ➤ The Montgomery County Police Department held its second annual Iron Dog competition last month in Dickerson where police dogs and handlers completed a three-mile off the grid course with mud pits, climbs and water crossings. The event raised $36,000 for Spike’s K-9 Fund + will help pay for vests, medical costs and training for the dogs. Montgomery Community Media
- ➤ Montgomery County has proposed a Tax Increment Financing plan — the first for a $2.8 billion development — for the Viva White Oak Project, a 280-acre site next to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration campus that will mix commercial, residential, retail, and public space. The project is expected to create more than 17,000 construction jobs, 9,000 permanent jobs and $62 million in annual revenue, but it still needs county council approval before moving forward.
