CRIME NEWS

  • Detectives arrested Davion Gray—23-year-old Gaithersburg resident—for shooting a man in a parking lot on Rockville Pike on April 21 at about 9:54 p.m. during a fight, and the victim suffered serious injuries while Gray is held without bail on charges including attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault and firearm use.  Montgomery Community Media
  • A Maryland doctor, 48-year-old Anissa Maroof of Potomac pleaded guilty to unlawfully distributing controlled substances from her Bethesda practice between January 2019 and June 2022 and now faces up to 20 years in prison.  FOX 5 DC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The D.C. metro grabbed the No.2 spot on CoWorking Cafe's list of best metro areas for working mothers, placing second only to Minneapolis. The study showed 77% of mothers with children under 18 were employed, a median income of $70,000 and child care costs averaging $13,800—about 9.2% of family income—with 74.4% covered by employer insurance and 591 pediatricians per 100,000 children.  WTOP

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lauren Merillana, a seventh grader at Robert Frost Middle School, earned a spot to compete in the national Scripps Spelling Bee and will advance as preliminary rounds begin Tuesday, May 27. The bee will feature quarterfinals on May 28 and finals on May 29 at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center+ it will air on ION TV.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools presented a new student code of conduct to the Board of Education on Thursday that will guide student behavior for the 2025–2026 school year—its measures include clear behavior expectations, restorative justice, and mandatory parent meetings.   • Montgomery County’s only charter school, MBLI, is preparing to open this fall in a temporary building because delays with permits have kept its permanent site on Goldenrod Lane in Germantown from being ready. MBLI has enrolled 280 sixth and seventh graders + is working with MCPS to address union and staffing issues as it finalizes plans.  MoCo360
  • MCPS teacher Luz Laboy Acosta is being celebrated during Teacher Appreciation Week for her work connecting students with science at Seneca Valley High School. She has launched a Green initiative that saves food, builds pollinator gardens, organizes clean-up events, and leads a field trip with 600 freshmen—demonstrating her strong commitment to hands-on learning and a more connected community.  Montgomery County Public Schools

  • Despite nearly a week of continuous rain the area remains under drought watch since July 2024. Officials said if spring and summer rains do not continue water reserves will likely be drawn down—by a 22 to 36% chance compared with the usual 8 to 15% probability.  WTOP
