CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County police warn that unlicensed workers offering yardwork may use distraction tactics to commit theft, advising homeowners—especially seniors and those living alone—to confirm licensing, avoid paying upfront, and secure their homes.  WJLA
  • A DC man, Eugene Teodor Gligor, pleaded guilty in a Montgomery County courtroom for the second-degree murder of Leslie Preer in her Chevy Chase home in 2001—police matched his DNA from a water bottle swab taken at Dulles International Airport—he will face up to 30 years in prison at his sentencing hearing on Aug. 28.  WUSA9
  • Eugene Gligor pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Montgomery County yesterday after DNA evidence linked him to the 2001 killing of Leslie Preer in Chevy Chase—he now faces up to 30 years when sentencing is set for August.  WJLA

  • Parkland Middle School music teacher Megan Campbell was named MCPS Teacher of the Year Tuesday night at The Music Center at Strathmore — a win that sets her to compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year and earn a one-year car lease from Fitzgerald Auto Malls.  MoCo360
  • Megan Campbell — an instrumental music teacher at Parkland Middle School — was named MCPS Teacher of the Year at The Music Center at Strathmore on May 6 and will now compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year; she was one of three finalists honored at an event that also recognized paraeducator John Sparrow and Rockville High School senior German Diaz-Peña.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • The Montgomery County Alliance of Black School Educators honored 26 graduating seniors on April 24—recognizing their academic excellence, leadership, and contributions to community service from high schools across the county.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • 7News reviewed a 70-page report from the National Education Association that shows U.S. public school teachers earned about $72,000 on average last school year—teachers in D.C. earned around $86,600 while Maryland educators saw more than a 6% raise and Virginia teachers earned $66,300. Local union leaders say pay still does not meet the living wage and Montgomery County is pushing for a 3.25% raise amid high housing costs.  WJLA
  • At John F. Kennedy High School, dance teacher Kendra Smith received a grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts to launch a project called FRUIT—an intergenerational dance program that uses creative movement to help students share personal stories. She is working with the ClancyWorks Dance Company and the Jewish Council for the Aging's InterAges Program to build bonds across generations.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • The Montgomery County Education Association announced on Tuesday that Leah Nayman will serve as its executive director beginning June 2, and she brings over 30 years of experience in labor leadership from roles including chief of staff at OSHA and the Maryland Department of Labor + she will work to advance public education in the county.  MoCo360
