💼 Business
AstraZeneca opened its new $300 million cell therapy manufacturing facility in Rockville on Monday at 9950 Medical Center Drive—designed to produce treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases from early next year.
The facility created 150 skilled jobs, joined AstraZeneca’s global network, and drew local leaders including Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller and County Executive Marc Elrich.
🎓 Education
On May 6th, teacher Vassiliki Key, a University of Maryland alumna, received a $1,000 check from her alma mater—presented during a pep rally at Shady Grove Middle School in Gaithersburg.
She said she was surprised by the gift and plans to use the money for her school community.
Montgomery County parents, teachers and staff are urging the superintendent to adopt an 'Away All Day' policy that would require students to lock away cell phones and other devices during school hours to reduce distractions and improve safety.
The board will review the pilot program, now active at 11 schools, at a meeting on May 8.
🌲 Environment
Spotted lanternfly nymphs are being seen in D.C., Maryland and Virginia; these invasive bugs are about a quarter inch long and are black with white spots.
They appear in May and will grow into adults by July—residents are urged to crush the insects to help protect local trees and crops.
🏛️ Government
County Council introduced a bill to raise fines for unlicensed profit parties — the law would increase fines from $25 to up to $500 to address disruptive events in neighborhoods, and a public hearing is set for June 10.
The proposed change aims to improve safety and community well-being.
On Saturday, May 10, Montgomery County's Department of Transportation will host a free Safety Day event for families at the Carver Educational Services Center (850 Hungerford Drive) in Rockville.
High school students will run interactive traffic activities, including a Traffic Garden and a bicycle raffle (designed to teach safe road habits).
Council members said it will be hard to pay for MCPS's $3.65 billion budget request for fiscal year 2026 due to uncertain economic conditions—many worry that a proposed tax increase from 3.2% to 3.3% by County Executive Marc Elrich may burden residents.
The council must vote on the proposal by May 15 and make a final budget decision by June 1.
