  • Montgomery County Department of Transportation will host a free Safety Day event on Saturday, May 10 at Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville as doors open at 11 a.m. and the event runs until 3 p.m. Local high school students will lead interactive activities on traffic and bike safety + the event will feature a traffic garden, a bike raffle for K-5 children, and live entertainment.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Peter Chang grew up in Wuhan and once planned to be a history teacher before leaving China with his family, working in kitchens while hiding from officials and ultimately building a portfolio of 18 restaurants in the region—including one in Rockville. His daughter Lydia now serves as CEO as he prepares to open a new restaurant in King of Prussia and plans expansion into New Jersey and Boston—key moves that reflect his continued growth in the culinary business.  WTOP

CRIME NEWS

  • Jorden Nylen Hungerford, 19, turned himself in at the Rockville City Police Department on Saturday for his alleged role in the April 26 homicide of Henry Krishawn Gilbert in Montgomery Village—another suspect, Demari Howard Brown, 20, was arrested Thursday on similar charges and is held without bond while awaiting a preliminary hearing on May 30.  MoCo360

  • Montgomery County will host a series of cultural events to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month through May 24—starting with a candy sushi workshop on May 10 and ending with a film screening and concert on May 24. Rockville residents can join the AAPI Month Celebration at the Rockville Memorial Library on May 18 from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MCPS teacher Krista McKim — a National Board Certified English and journalism teacher at Rockville High School — was selected as one of 35 2025 Grosvenor Teacher Fellows and will travel to Antarctica from Nov. 17–28 to gain insights for her classroom.
