CRIME NEWS

  • Montgomery County Police responded to three shootings overnight in Montgomery County, with shots fired in Germantown causing damage to vehicles and a home + a man shot while leaving his car in Derwood and another hit while walking in Gaithersburg taken to the hospital for minor injuries, and no suspects have been located.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • First-grade teacher Richard Ensley at Diamond Elementary won the Shirley J. Lowrie Thank You for Teaching Award and received a prize ($2,500) for his engaging lessons that help his students learn.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Fifteen Montgomery County high school seniors earned corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarships in the first awards for the graduating class of 2025 (they were selected from National Merit Finalists). About 830 students nationwide won awards from 124 companies (with amounts ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 a year and many awards renewable for up to four years) and may use them at any accredited college.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Students at Brooke Grove Elementary made a Capitals playoff music video at the MedStar Capitals IcePlex with help from former player Peter Bondra and former player Alan May—this project is part of the Caps in School program led by musician Paulie Z and the video played during the Capitals' first playoff game intermission and will air Tuesday night.  FOX 5 DC
  • The Washington Post announced finalists for its Principal and Teacher of the Year Awards on April 22, and Montgomery County Public Schools highlighted outstanding work in boosting student achievement. Dr. Joshua Fine—principal at Flower Hill Elementary—and Rebecca Burtram from Odessa Shannon Middle School were recognized for their innovative leadership and teaching methods.  Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Peter Boyko — a junior at Northwest High School — and Anuva Maloo, a junior at Montgomery Blair High School, were chosen as finalists for the Montgomery County Board of Education student member seat by over 400 middle and high school delegates at a nominating convention in Gaithersburg. MCPS students cast ballots on Wednesday, and the winner was set to be announced at 5:30 p.m.  MoCo360
  • On Wednesday, Sandy Spring Friends School announced it had received funding guarantees to remain open through the 2027-2028 school year despite plans to close after the 2024-2025 year due to financial issues—community fundraising and upcoming task force efforts will help secure long-term stability.
