ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A truck backed over two pedestrians in Rockville on Wednesday afternoon, April 16th, at about 12:38 p.m., and emergency crews treated the injuries on scene before transporting both victims in critical condition—officials said the incident occurred in a parking lot.  Montgomery Community Media

CRIME NEWS

  • A 23-year-old man from Silver Spring was arrested Tuesday in Montgomery County after he fired multiple rounds into a Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Monday following a shoplifting removal, authorities said—officers later found a loaded handgun and suspected cocaine at his home and he now faces charges including first-degree assault, reckless endangerment and firearm offenses.  FOX 5 DC
  • A 17-year-old in Montgomery County is in jail after making threats at a high school—he faces charges of mass violence and a hate crime, and police say no credible threat exists.  FOX 5 DC

  • Students at Brooke Grove Elementary School in Olney wrote and starred in a music video to celebrate the Capitals' 50th season and playoff run starting Monday— the video debuted on the team’s social media and may be shown during a game at Capital One Arena.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery County’s Pre-Release Center in Rockville has helped more than 20,000 residents prepare for life outside jail since 1972 — the program offers job training, health treatment and family support designed by local judges and council members to ease reentry.  WTOP
  • Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown joined a coalition of 21 states to support a lawsuit seeking a court order to stop planned layoffs at the Social Security Administration that his office said could delay benefits for 1.2 million Marylanders—375,000 of whom are older residents.  WTOP
  • Sen. Chris Van Hollen met in El Salvador with mistakenly deported Maryland man Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Thursday evening to advocate for his release, and the Washington Area Metro Transit Authority will remove over 500 bus stops in June, including several in Montgomery County, to improve safety. A townhome fire in Montgomery Village on Thursday caused water damage that displaced several families—no one was injured as the sprinkler system controlled the blaze.  MoCo360
  • Gov. Wes Moore announced a new hiring process today under the Maryland Department of Budget and Management to help federal workers use one application for positions such as Human Resources, Procurement Officers, Accountants and Fiscal Accounts Technicians. The system will speed up reviews and applications will remain open until May 2 — a move to help workers affected by layoffs find new roles faster.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Rockville-based developer TM Associates received approval from Montgomery County Planning Board on April 18 for a 154-unit affordable housing project at 11800 Nebel St in North Bethesda. The seven-story building—designed with green features like geothermal heat pumps and rooftop solar panels as well as a 99-year covenant to preserve affordability—will begin construction within a year.  MoCo360
