  • Montgomery Parks is hosting the second annual Festival Sligo Creek on May 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. along Sligo Creek Parkway when the road is closed to traffic—attendees will enjoy live music on three stages, interactive nature activities, and games for children while using local food stands and limited street parking, and alcohol is not allowed.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Jack Fitzgerald, founder of Fitzgerald Auto Malls who helped over 52,000 local families with his child safety seat program, died last week at age 89—County Executive Marc Elrich credited his efforts with saving lives and strengthening Montgomery—and many community members now remember his warm, hands-on approach.  MoCo360

CRIME NEWS

  • Rockville City Police said that a 28-year-old Hispanic male was stabbed in the eye by known assailants near Thomas S. Wootton High School on Wednesday night — he was taken to a local hospital with cuts and bruises after calling 911.  MoCo360
  • On Thursday, police charged a 17-year-old MCPS student after he allegedly left a voicemail threatening an MCPS school with hateful language against the principal and various groups—since he is a minor, his case will be handled by the Department of Juvenile Services.  MoCo360

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, more than 1,200 former federal workers and other job seekers filled Silver Spring Civic Building to look for local work opportunities. The career fair was sponsored by the county, the University of Maryland's Center for Democracy and Civic Engagement, the state Department of Labor, and Civic Match — officials said the event aims to support displaced workers.  Montgomery Community Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maryland legislators approved a new law named for Sergeant Patrick Kepp, a Montgomery County officer who lost both legs when a driver hit him intentionally at over 100 mph, to impose tougher penalties on reckless driving including up to 60 days jail for exceeding speed limits by 48 km/h. Raphael Mayorga, found guilty on multiple charges for the incident, will be sentenced on August 27 while the law awaits Governor Wes Moore's signature.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County’s Office of Food Systems Resilience and the Office of Grants Management awarded $750,000 in grants to six groups that will increase access to healthy, locally grown food for families with children facing food insecurity. The awardees will serve 700 households at 12 pediatric health care sites — providing regular nutrition education from trained community health workers.  Montgomery Community Media
