EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Sandy Spring Friends School -- a Quaker private school in Sandy Spring -- will close at the end of the 2024-2025 school year because it cannot cover its operating costs. The board said it will work with families by offering tuition refunds and guidance for finding new schools as graduation is planned for June 7. MoCo360
- ➤ Montgomery County Public Schools plan to change the grading system to address student complaints about confusing rules and grade inflation—these changes include averaging the first two marking periods, a 10-day rule for work submission, and new teacher training. - ➤ Briggs Chaney Middle School celebrated National Poetry Month and Literacy Day by showcasing student poetry, with 100 students having their original works published. - ➤ Governor Moore will sign House Bill 1378 that amends the Child Victims Act by lowering compensation limits for abuse survivors to $700,000 from private institutions and $400,000 from governmental agencies—measures that will take effect on June 1. WJLA
- ➤ Maryland lawmakers, including Senator Chris Van Hollen, Congressman Steny Hoyer and Congressman Glenn Ivey, met on Monday at Goddard Flight Space Center to oppose a plan cutting NASA's budget from over $7 billion to nearly $4 billion this year. They warned the cuts could cost local jobs and send engineers overseas—threatening the region’s economic and security interests. WTOP
- ➤ Maryland legislators approved the Sgt- Patrick Kepp Act, a law named after a Montgomery police officer who lost both legs when a driver hit him at over 100 mph that imposes tougher penalties including up to 60 days in jail for driving 30 mph above the speed limit. Raphael Mayorga, 21, was found guilty on the day Kepp was injured and will be sentenced on Aug- 27 while the bill now awaits Gov- Wes Moore's signature. Montgomery Community Media
