EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools hosted its annual Youth Climate Summit at Julius West Middle School on April 5—nearly 200 students learned about climate issues, heard remarks from local officials, and participated in workshops that included shrub planting and waste reduction measures. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, Montgomery County Council approved changes that will speed up turning nearly empty office buildings into housing as part of its More Housing N.O.W. plan amid a housing shortage and rising home prices. The new rules offer faster permit reviews — and provide tax breaks for projects that include affordable units while allowing self-storage in mostly vacant buildings.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Fire Chief Corey Smedley paused his plan to shift staff from the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department to cover new Advanced Life Support units as emergency calls have risen by nearly 30% since 2013. He is meeting with firefighters and will ask council members for more funding on April 21 — a decision made amid concerns from career firefighters about balancing resources.  WJLA
  • Maryland senator Chris Van Hollen led 24 senators in sending a letter Tuesday to Homeland Security and ICE urging the immediate return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia—a Maryland father mistakenly deported to an El Salvador prison despite his granted protected status—with lawmakers stating that deportations without due process are unacceptable.  WJLA
