COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The county's Department of Transportation will host a free Community Safety Day in Rockville on May 10 — the event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Carver Educational Services Center parking lot on 850 Hungerford Drive and includes safety demonstrations, music, and activities for children. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Three people, including two children, were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning after Montgomery County Fire Rescue pulled them from a building on Ruatan Street in Takoma Park on March 3rd— the children were unconscious and the adult was awake at the time of the rescue.  WJLA

CRIME NEWS

  • Two teens—a 16-year-old from Wheaton and a 17-year-old from Olney—were arrested on multiple handgun charges after officers stopped a Silver Honda near Glenmont Shopping Center on April 2 and found a loaded handgun in the vehicle.  FOX 5 DC

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A LendingTree study released April 4 found that raising a child now costs an average of $29,419 per year—35% higher than two years ago—with families in Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia facing high expenses as Maryland ranked fourth at $31,601, Washington ranked ninth at $29,186 and Virginia ranked fourteenth at $26,666. The study analyzed costs for essentials like food, clothing and transportation.  FOX 5 DC

  • Montgomery County transportation officials will hold a virtual public meeting on April 30 at 7 p.m. to discuss plans to rehabilitate the 1936 Brink Road Bridge over Great Seneca Creek; public feedback can be sent by email or online until May 30 (written comments count equally with oral remarks).  Montgomery Community Media
  • Maryland transportation leaders said today that the Purple Line has entered a dynamic testing phase on a one-mile track using eight light rail vehicles. Officials said testing will continue through 2026—passengers are expected in 2027 as the project reaches 76% complete.  WJLA
