COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Montgomery County will hold 16 Easter egg hunts for children in April—events include free and ticketed activities with crafts, games and meet-and-greets with the Easter Bunny at locations such as Gaithersburg, Boyds and beyond. In Rockville, The Village at Rockville National Lutheran Community will host a family event on April 13 from 1 to 3 p.m. that will offer live music, crafts and cotton candy.  MoCo360

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction on the new Wegmans at 1590 Rockville Pike is nearly complete and the store will open on June 25. The store is hiring and training local employees for positions in produce, bakery, meat, and prepared foods and will offer free parking for 90 minutes daily from 6 a.m. to midnight.  MoCo360

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Covenant Life School is hosting its 11th annual Servathon on April 17—an event when students will complete over 1,000 acts of service by preparing meals, creating gifts and assembling supply kits for local organizations. Elementary, middle and high school students will also visit local non-profits and care centers as the school works to raise $150,000 for tuition assistance.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Late last month, an 8-year-old girl was told by a teacher at a Clarksburg school that she could not wear her hijab, which caused her anxiety and led her parents to seek help from CAIR. CAIR investigated the incident—filing a report to Montgomery County Public Schools and prompting the school to move the student to another class while removing the teacher from further contact.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Montgomery County Public Schools held its first public information session Wednesday night and launched a community survey for an ongoing boundary study that will affect 19 high schools. The study will guide plans for a Woodward High reopening, an expansion at Damascus High, and a new Crown High in Gaithersburg—more meetings and surveys are scheduled through early next year.  MoCo360

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Department of Education sent letters to all 50 states to announce funding cuts that may impact Montgomery County schools—MSDE said it will resend the original justification and has contacted the Attorney General while Montgomery County Public Schools continues to assess the situation.  Montgomery Community Media

HEALTH NEWS

  • The fifth Finer Womanhood Expo for women’s health and wellness took place last weekend at Montgomery College Germantown—hosted by the Gamma Alpha Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta sorority—and featured guest speakers on mental health, food insecurity, and health equity along with free screenings and over 20 vendors owned by Black and women entrepreneurs.  Montgomery Community Media
