  • Silver Spring therapist Roz Beroza is leading a project that offers free mental health evaluations for former federal workers while the Maryland Senate’s Executive Nominations Committee approved Jim Shalleck as a state elections board nominee. A Damascus townhouse fire displaced a family, caused about $250,000 in damage, and resulted in the loss of three cats on Tuesday.  MoCo360

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Montgomery County Public Schools announced that 33 Maryland students were selected for the All-Eastern Honors Ensembles—gathering top scoring musicians from 10 states and featuring mixed choir, treble choir, orchestra, concert band, modern band, and jazz band from nearly 200 Maryland applicants. The chosen student musicians will travel to Hartford, Connecticut on April 26-27 to perform at the NAfME Eastern Division Conference.  Montgomery County Public Schools

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Montgomery Parks plans prescribed fires at the River Road Shale Barrens and Serpentine Barren conservation parks to boost native plant growth and diversity. The burns will occur by April 15 if weather conditions allow and local residents will be notified when smoke is expected.  MoCo360
  • On Wednesday evening, fire crews contained a large brush fire at Great Seneca Valley Stream Park in Gaithersburg after winds of 35 mph under a Red Flag Warning fanned the flames and prompted temporary evacuations. Forty-five firefighters quickly worked to secure the area while nearby residents prepared to leave as a precaution.  FOX 5 DC

  • Federal government workers affected by the Department of Government Efficiency cuts have several job fairs planned in the DMV from March 31 to April 7, including virtual sessions and in-person events. Rockville residents can attend the Fair Chance Symposium by Worksource Montgomery at 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 51 Mannakee Street Auditorium — an event aimed at assisting displaced federal researchers — to explore new opportunities.  WJLA
  • Montgomery County leaders will host the fourth United in Service and Support virtual community meeting on Wednesday, April 2, at 7 p.m. via Zoom to discuss career opportunities and federal employment pathways with Councilmember Laurie-Ann Sayles and representatives from the Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC), WorkSource Montgomery and the County Office of Human Resources.   • Montgomery County will host its 5th annual 'Right from the Start' event focusing on Babies Born Healthy to support Black maternal and child health on April 12 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring (11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.).
