  • A male was shot in the leg on Sunday night in the Layhill area on Taos Court — police said he was taken to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and no suspect is in custody.  Montgomery Community Media

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students & families gathered Monday afternoon at Wootton High School to protest the decision to transfer its music & drama teachers next year due to a drop in enrollment. Acting principal Joseph Boston Jr. said the staffing change does not mean the arts programs are being eliminated and urged Montgomery County Public Schools to reconsider the move.  FOX 5 DC
  • Applications for Pre-K and Head Start for Fall 2025 are now open for children who turn 3 or 4 by Sept. 1 and for families meeting income guidelines, according to Montgomery County Public Schools.   • Montgomery County Council President Kate Stewart announced Monday that a new public-private coalition—Mobilize Montgomery—was formed to support local businesses and more than 77,000 federal workers affected by budget cuts. The coalition includes county agencies and local business groups and will offer webinars, job postings and business incentives.  Montgomery Community Media
  • Legislative leaders and the House Appropriations Committee restored $300 million in proposed cuts to developmental disability services after weeks of public testimony and lobbying, easing funding reductions for fiscal 2026. Advocates remain cautiously optimistic as further budget talks — planned in the coming weeks — may adjust other funding measures.  MoCo360
  • Montgomery County government and local business partners launched Mobilize Montgomery Monday to help federal workers and businesses impacted by government cuts.   • Montgomery County will hold a one-day hiring event for correctional officers on April 12 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Public Safety Headquarters at 100 Edison Park Drive in Gaithersburg so that candidates can complete exams and physicals in one day and receive a contingent job offer.  Montgomery Community Media

  • Health officials confirmed three measles cases in Maryland on March 24—none are linked to local spread because over 96% of residents are vaccinated.
